Bar HarborThe town of Bar Harbor is located on Mount Desert Island in Hancock County, Maine. Bar Harbor is well known as a summer destination but it is has a vibrant year round community as well. The latest 2000 census set the year round population at 4,820, but don't let its modest size fool you. This Island community enjoys many cultural activities throughout the year including music festivals, art shows, live theater, and more. There are many organizations offering everything from book clubs or photography classes to political discussion groups and organized hiking events. Many libraries, museums, and community centers scattered across the Island round out a very vibrant social scene.
Our local YMCA features an indoor pool, lap track, basketball court, exercise gym, and other amenities, along with on-going programs and activities geared for all ages, from infants to seniors. Bar Harbor is home to Jackson Laboratory, a world-renowned cancer research center that employs more 1,100 people. The Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory and College of the Atlantic are two other well-known institutions in the area. Connors Emerson, a highly regarded K-8 elementary school, is located near downtown Bar Harbor, just a short walk from Park Place Condominiums. Mount Desert Island Regional High School is a few miles outside of Bar Harbor. MDI High is known statewide for its award-winning music and theater departments and its championship sports teams. Mount Desert Island Hospital in Bar Harbor is designed a Critical Access Hospital featuring state-of-the-art medical services. MDI Hospital also staffs numerous clinics and out-patient facilities throughout the Island.
The Bar Harbor Airport in Trenton is 20-minutes from downtown Bar Harbor and offers daily round-trip flights to Boston along with services for private planes and jets. The "CAT" is a modern, high-speed ferry that is berthed in Bar Harbor and travels from here to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, during the warm weather months.
While many folks "from away" think of Bar Harbor as a vacation destination because of its many restaurants, unique shops, and galleries-and of course its proximity to beautiful Acadia National Park-Bar Harbor is also an active working waterfront village. Lobstermen and other fishermen, boat and yacht builders, all call Bar Harbor home.
