This is a beaver lodge on Witch Hole Pond, about a mile and a half from Park Place. A large variety of wildlife, from song birds to birds of prey (peregrine falcons and bald eagles), to deer and moose, co-exist with us and make the Island their home.

Acadia National Park
Acadia National Park is located on the rugged coast of Maine and was the first established National Park east of the Mississippi. Over 120 miles of trails wind through the more than 47,000 acres of woodland, granite-domed mountains, and ocean shoreline. Dozens of lakes, ponds, and streams attract a huge variety of wildlife. Additionally, there are 45 miles of carriage roads in the park which are closed to vehicle traffic. This makes the carriage roads a very family-friendly way to walk, hike, bike, horseback ride, and in the winter, snowshoe or cross country ski. Along with the trails, there are a number of other especially outstanding spots in Acadia that should not be missed.
At 1,532 feet, Cadillac Mountain is the highest point on the North Atlantic seaboard and an amazing place to watch the sunrise or set. There are actually 17 mountains on Mount Desert Island, most with hiking trails that vary in degree of difficulty from gentle inclines to the aptly named Precipice Trail.
.
Ocean Drive, also known as the Park Loop Road, is a 27-mile tour with frequent turn out’s along the way that allow you to pause for pictures or simply marvel at the some of the most beautiful natural scenery you’ll ever see. Spend an afternoon at Sand Beach and swim in the Atlantic Ocean--but be forewarned, it’s COLD! Listen to the tremendous booming of the surf surging into the rocky cavern that is Thunder Hole (for best effect, time your visit for high tide). Great Head and Otter Cliffs offer sky-high ocean views. And the traditional end to your Ocean Drive excursion has to be tea and freshly baked hot popovers on the lawn at the Jordan Pond House.
If you prefer to let someone else do the driving, the Island Explorer Shuttle Bus system runs from late June through early October and makes “on call” stops throughout the park and the Island. And yes, dogs are allowed in the park as long as they are on a lead.
